6 Key Skills

There are 6 key skills each of which can be accredited at 4 different levels.  Below is a summary of the skills and levels. 

Key Skills Standards give details of what learners should e able to do and how key skills achievement should be assesses.

Part A

Part A of the standards gives clear guidance on the knowledge and skills that are required for a specific skill at a specific level.  New standards are due for release in mid 2008 that will provide more detailed guidance on how this content may be delivered.

Part B

Part B of the standards tell you EXACTLY what a candidate must do for accreditation.

  • Agree/set targets and plan how to meet them
  • Take responsibility for some of your own learning

Problem Solving

  • Identify a problem and suggest solutions
  • Plan and try out one solution
  • Check if problem is solved and review
Communication

  • Discussion /Presentation
  • Reading including images
  • Writing for an audience and purpose
ICT

  • Research using ICT and non-ICT sources
  • Develop new material
  • Present findings
Application of Number

  • Collect data
  • Do sums
  • Present findings

4 Levels

Level 1 Learners, working under close supervision, demonstrate their ability to apply skills to routine situations and tasks over a short period.
Level 2 Learners, with support from a supervisor, apply their skills to familiar situations and tasks
Level 3 Learners apply their skills to unfamiliar and challenging situations and tasks
Level 4 Learners plan their own strategy to develop the skills needed to meet new, complex challenges over an extended period
